چکیده
A po)ysaccharide flocculant of Klebsiella pneumoniae H12 has been suggested to mediate microbe-plant interactions with the aid of Ca2' [K. Nakata et al., Biosci. BiotechnoL Biochern., 64, 459-465, 2ooOl. Here, twoway regulation of polysaccharide-mediated i"teractions between KL pneumoniae and Ruphanus sativus was studied using organic acids. Namety, 10 mM equiyatents of organic acids promoted production of the polysaccharide by the bacterium, but inhibited flocculation of bacterial cells by the polysaccharide. These phenomena were counterba]anced by equi-molar equiyalents of Ca2+, suggesting cempetition for Ca2+ between the carboxylic residues ef the polysaccharide and those of the aliphatic acids. By electron microscopy observations, bacterial cell aggregates were sparsely distributed oyer

Book Review: Principles of Plant-Microbe Interactions: Microbes for Sustainable Agriculture
The significance of plant-microbe interactions in sustainable agriculture is enormous. These interactions may be negative such as the host-pathogen interactions leading to the disease development in plants or positive likes the interaction of the plants with the beneficial soil microbiota for stimulating the plant growth, conferring biotic, and abiotic stress tolerance in plants and helping the...
متن کاملMicrobial Volatiles: Small Molecules with an Important Role in Intra- and Inter-Kingdom Interactions
During the last decades, research on the function of volatile organic compounds focused primarily on the interactions between plants and insects. However, microorganisms can also release a plethora of volatiles and it appears that microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) can play an important role in intra- and inter-kingdom interactions. So far, most studies are focused on aboveground vola...
متن کاملThermo-Regulation of Genes Mediating Motility and Plant Interactions in Pseudomonas syringae
Pseudomonas syringae is an important phyllosphere colonist that utilizes flagellum-mediated motility both as a means to explore leaf surfaces, as well as to invade into leaf interiors, where it survives as a pathogen. We found that multiple forms of flagellum-mediated motility are thermo-suppressed, including swarming and swimming motility. Suppression of swarming motility occurs between 28° an...
متن کاملRegulation of miR159 and miR396 mediated by Piriformospora indica confer drought tolerance in rice
Drought stress is one of the most determinative factors of agriculture and plays a major role in limiting crop productivity. This limitation is going to rising through climate changes. However, plants have their own defense systems to moderate the adverse effects of climatic conditions. MicroRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene regulation is one of these defense mechanisms. The root endophyti...
متن کاملFlagella-driven chemotaxis towards exudate components is an important trait for tomato root colonization by Pseudomonas fluorescens.
Motility is a major trait for competitive tomato root-tip colonization by Pseudomonas fluorescens. To test the hypothesis that this role of motility is based on chemotaxis toward exudate components, cheA mutants that were defective in flagella-driven chemotaxis but retained motility were constructed in four P. fluorescens strains. After inoculation of seedlings with a 1:1 mixture of wild-type a...
